Chest Physician :
A chest physician, also known as a pulmonologist, is a specialized doctor who deals with diseases affecting the respiratory system. A chest physician or pulmonologist is qualified with an MBBS graduation, followed by post-graduation in MD, pulmonary medicine, or respiratory medicine, and some are qualified with DM or DNB in critical care medicine and pulmonary medicine. Chest physicians or pulmonologists specialize in managing many diseases affecting the respiratory system, such as bronchiectasis, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), sleep apnea, pneumonia, tuberculosis, cystic fibrosis, sarcoidosis, interstitial lung disease, and pulmonary hypertension. A chest physician will do procedures like bronchoscopy, sleep studies, lung biopsy, thoracentesis, and tracheal stent placement. When there are symptoms like chest pain, breathlessness, persistent cough, blood in sputum, loud snoring with pause in breathing during sleep (sleep apnea), family history of respiratory diseases, wheezing, one should consult a chest physician.
