An oncologist is a medical doctor who specializes in diagnosing, staging, and treating cancer. The Oncologist determines appropriate tests for diagnosing cancer accurately, reads the test results of MRI scans, biopsies, and ultrasounds, and prescribes medication, chemotherapy, radiation, and surgical removal. Types of oncologists are Surgical oncologists, where surgery is done to remove the tumor and nearby tissue; Medical oncologists, where medication is used along with chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy; and Radiation oncologists, who use radiation to treat the cancer cells. Other oncologists include breast oncologists, geriatric oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, hematologist oncologists, neuro-oncologists, pediatric oncologists, thoracic oncologists, and urologic oncologists.
