PCOD :
PCOD or polycystic ovary disease is a hormonal imbalance disease leading to the formation of multiple cysts in the ovaries. PCOD occurs due to the release of reproductive hormones in excessive amounts and in women with PCOD, androgen hormone is produced in unusually high levels. The presenting complaints of PCOD include cysts in the ovaries, irregular periods, obesity, darkening of the skin, abnormal hair growth, acne, thinning hair, skin tags and infertility issues in women. The factors responsible for causing PCOD include insulin resistance, obesity, higher levels of androgen, a male hormone and low grade inflammation. If left untreated, PCOD may further complicate to preeclampsia, high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, preterm birth or C- section delivery. The symptoms of PCOD addressed by a doctor include irregular or missed periods, enlarged ovaries or polycystic appearance of ovaries on ultrasound and signs of excess amounts of androgen. PCOD management involves taking medications to block androgens, and insulin- sensitizing medicines and making lifestyle modifications.
