Endometriosis :
Endometriosis is a gynecological condition where the inner lining of the uterus called endometrium will grow out side the uterus like ovaries, intestines, fallopian tubes, etc. This lining similar to the endometrial cells will respond to the body hormones to grow and bleed during menstruation. Due to lack of proper channel to out flow this will cause inflammation and pain. Though the exact cause of endometriosis is not known, genetic and environmental factors are considered to play an important role.
Signs and symptoms include excessive bleeding during menstruation, pain while menstruating, painful sexual intercourse, pain in pelvic region, infertility. Diagnosis can be done by imaging techniques like ultrasound or MRI, laparoscopic biopsy can confirm the diagnosis. Treatment of endometriosis include pain killers to reduced the suffering of the patient, hormonal therapy, surgery may be suggested to women who does not respond well to hormonal therapy. Surgery removes the extra endometrial tissue from sites other than uterus and destroys it.
