Conjunctivitis :
Conjunctivitis makes the eyes swell and turn red due to an infection or allergy. It can develop in a single eye or both eyes. This condition is commonly caused by bacteria or viruses, which can spread easily among individuals. Viral conjunctivitis causes a watery discharge and is the most contagious type. Its bacterial counterpart is also contagious; however, it tends to cause a sticky discharge and not a watery one. Allergic conjunctivitis is not contagious. Besides swelling and redness, this condition causes irritation, itching, and burning in the eyes. The body can fight off this condition within one to two weeks. However, using prescribed eyedrops can help with the symptoms and speed up recovery. Washing the hands frequently, keeping the contact lenses clean, and avoiding contact with the eyes are effective ways to avoid spreading conjunctivitis to others.
