Gout :
Accumulation of extra uric acid, which leads to the formation of crystals in the joints, is called gout. It is another form of arthritis that is seen in larger joints like the foot and knees, ankles, hands, wrists, and fingers of the lower limb. Symptoms include severe pain, swelling, discoloration, stiffness, and severe tenderness. Gout is more commonly seen in men than women. Risk factors for developing gout include obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, or any underlying disease like congestive heart failure, hypertension, elevated blood sugar levels, kidney disease, and also patients who are on certain medications, which include diuretics and immunosuppressants. Foods that are rich in fructose, high sugars, and alcohol can also be a cause of gout. Diagnosis is made by a physical examination, basic blood investigations, X-ray, ultrasound, CT, and MRI. Treatment includes administration of NSAIDS, steroids and a healthy lifestyle.
