A Rheumatologist is a doctor who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of musculoskeletal diseases and autoimmune conditions like arthritis. They provide services in treatment plans that help to manage pain, improve function, slow disease progression, and improve health and quality of life in patients with rheumatic diseases. They are doctors who pursue an MBBS degree followed by a specialization (MD/DNB) in Rheumatology or a master's (MD) in General medicine followed by a fellowship in Rheumatology. They specialized in the treatment of diseases like arthritis, autoimmune diseases like lupus, scleroderma, Sjogren's syndrome, inflammatory conditions like polymyalgia rheumatica, connective tissue disease like systemic lupus erythematosus, and other conditions like fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, tendinitis, back pain, and bursitis. They use various imaging techniques like x-ray, CT-scan, MRI, blood tests, and tissue biopsies for the diagnosis of condition and employ joint injections, trigger point injections, bursal injections, and surgery if needed for the management of the conditions.
