Pemphigus
Pemphigus is a rare group of blistering autoimmune diseases that affect the skin and mucus membrane which causes blisters. There are different types of pemphigus and can be caused by various factors like autoimmune response, genetic predisposition, environmental triggers ( stress, UV light) and medications like ACE inhibitors, penicillamine etc,. Patients present with blisters on the skin and mucous membranes like mouth, nose and eyes, nasal, oral or genital ulcers, painful lesions, skin peeling and crusting, raw, tender skin, difficulty swallowing or eating (if oral blisters are present). Diagnosis is made by physical examination, biopsy and histopathological examination, immunofluorescence testing . If not treated pemphigus can be fatal due to opportunistic infections. Most important treatment is by high dose steroids, topical steroids, intralesional injections, immunosuppresants, IVIG,biologics like rituiximab etc,.
