Insomnia :

Insomnia is a medical term used to refer sleeplessness due to difficulty in falling asleep or unable to maintain being asleep. The causes for insomnia could be acute like recent history of travelling from other country, stress, discomfort, change in shift hours, excessive consumption of caffeine containing drinks, certain medication and environmental factors. Few long term causes of insomnia are certain mental health conditions like anxiety and depression, hormonal disturbances like pregnancy and menopause, breathing issues while sleeping and few medical conditions.

Signs and symptoms of insomnia are difficulty in falling asleep, inability to maintain being asleep, non refreshing sleep, not able to fall asleep after interrupted waking, drowsiness all the day, difficulty to focus, irritability, early fatigue, etc. A thorough sleep study can diagnose the condition which monitors the activity of brain while sleeping. Treatment include removal of underlying cause, sleep inducing medication and lifestyle changes like optimizing the sleep schedule and environment to fall asleep early.
