ITP is called as immune thrombocytopenia or idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura is an auto immune blood disorder that is characterized by a decreased number of platelets. A decreased platelet count can cause bleeding gums, internal bleeding and easy bruising. ITP is categorized into two main types acute and chronic. Acute ITP is most commonly seen in children, viral infections being the trigger factor while chronic ITP is seen more often in adults and it lasts for more than 6 months. The significant cause of ITP is idiopathic and is treated by including ongoing monitoring of platelet levels, medications, and in more complex cases surgical removal of the spleen (splenectomy).
