Atrial septal defect is a congenital heart disorder resulting from the incomplete closure (forming a hole) of the atrium leading to an abnormal flow of blood between the atria(upper two chambers of the heart). ASD surgery (atrial septal defect surgery)is done to repair or fix the hole in the atrium. ASD surgery can be done through two different techniques, namely the traditional open heart surgery and catheter based treatment. The type of procedure employed is based on various factors such as the size of the hole, overall health condition of the patient, etc. Ostium secundum, patent foramen ovale, ostium primum and sinus venosus, etc are the different types of ASD.
