Knee replacement is an orthopaedic surgical treatment to replace a damaged or dysfunctional knee joint with an artificial joint (prosthesis), when conservative therapy has not provided relief from pain and loss of mobility. Knee replacement can be total knee replacement where the entire knee joint is replaced when the damage is extensive and involves all the three compartments of the knee, or a partial or uni-compartmental knee replacement is done when the damage is extensive but limited to only one compartment of the knee.
