What is hernia?
Hernia is the outpouching of an organ when it bulges out through an opening in the muscle that is supposed to hold it in place. Most commonly, the bowels bulge out through a weakened area in the abdomen. Hernias occur in the abdomen in most cases but can also be seen in the upper thigh and groin region. In hernia there is a lump that is present while a person coughs, in upright position or while bending down, or coughing. Discomfort or pain in the area can be present. However, a specific treatment is not generally required. If the size of the hernia is coming in the way of normal everyday activities a surgical repair is necessary. Open hernia repair procedure is performed under general anesthesia by a gastroenterologist. The surgeon pushes the lump into the desired position and repairs the defect with a supportive mesh material to strengthen the weakened area. This helps the organs or tissues to stay in place.
