A General Surgeon is a doctor who specializes in performing surgical procedures for the management and treatment of a wide range of diseases.

A qualified General Surgeon completes 5½ years of training in MBBS, followed by 3 years of training in MS or DNB General Surgery. Further fellowship and specialization courses may also be done.

A qualified General Surgeon is trained to operate on the digestive tract and structure within the abdomen, the skin and soft tissues, head and neck, blood vessels, hormone producing glands, wounds and traumatic injuries.

Qualified General Surgeons who have received additional training in laparoscopic or minimally invasive surgery can perform a wide range of these surgical procedures.

Some common surgeries performed by General Surgeons include appendectomy for removal of the Appendix, Hernia, Hydrocele and Varicocele surgeries, minor colon and rectal surgeries, trauma surgeries, etc.

Qualified General Surgeons are trained to operate on the thyroid, parathyroid and the adrenal glands, and other endocrine glands as well.

Qualified General Surgeons perform surgical procedures on the breast such as lumpectomy or mastectomy, and they limit their practice to non-cosmetic procedures performed on the breasts.

A General Surgeon will discuss your problem with you and inquire in detail about your symptoms and perform an examination to assess if surgical intervention is needed and also advise few blood tests and imaging tests as needed.

A General Surgeon may ask for blood tests such as CBP, coagulation profile, liver and renal function, blood sugar levels, etc. Additional tests such as X-rays, ultrasound, CT, or MRI may be advised.
