Frequently asked questions

Urinary incontinence treatment doctors describe the condition as the loss of control over the bladder leading to the loss of urine that may range from very small amounts, or to a complete lack of control to hold back any urine at all.

The condition is much more likely to be present in women than in men, due to various factors including pregnancy, etc.

Depending on the type, symptoms of urinary incontinence may be loss of small amounts of urine during coughing or sneezing, a sudden urge to pass urine and loss of urine immediately, a constant dribbling or leaking of urine, or a mix of the above symptoms

Urinary incontinence is diagnosed with the help of a medical history, and a clinical examination, followed by investigations such as urine tests, and post-void residual volume testing.

Medical treatment for urinary incontinence may include medications such as anticholinergics, alpha-blockers, or topical estrogen for women, electrical stimulation, pessaries, nerve-stimulating devices, botox injections, etc.

Causes of urinary incontinence can include:

  • UTIs
  • Constipation
  • Trauma from pregnancy and childbirth
  • Aging
  • Menopause
  • Prostate enlargement
  • Tumors
  • Some foods and drinks temporarily
