The various types of blood cancers that are seen include lymphoid cancers, which affect the white blood cells and are further divided into acute or chronic lymphoid, lymphoblastic, and lymphocytic leukemias, and myeloid leukemias that affect the red blood cell, platelet, and B cells forming bone marrow cells and further classified as acute or chronic myeloid, myelogenic, and myeloblastic leukemias.
The survival rate for blood cancers depends on the type of cancer present, the stage at which it is diagnosed, the kind of treatment that is received, and the response of the cancer to the treatment. In a majority of cases when cancers are diagnosed early and treated appropriately, the survival rate is generally very good.
Some blood cancers are aggressive and very serious if they are not detected early and properly managed, while other blood cancers can easily be diagnosed and completely cured.
A blood cancer, also known as leukemia is a cancer that affects the various components of blood and blood-forming tissues such as the bone marrow.
Blood cancer specialists say that the causes of blood cancer primarily include the development of mutations in the blood-forming cells of the body within the bone marrow. Factors that increase the risk of blood cancer include the history of previous cancer treatment through chemotherapy or radiotherapy, family history of blood cancers, certain inherited disorders, smoking, exposure to toxic chemicals, etc.
The best specialist for blood cancer treatment is a Hematologist, an Oncologist specialising in the evaluation, treatment, and management of diseases of the blood and blood-forming tissues, including blood cancers.
Blood cancers are one of the most common cancers that are seen affecting children, and individuals in the adolescent age group. Children can be affected by acute leukemias, which may be either lymphoid leukemias or myeloid leukemias.
The treatment of blood cancers is usually done with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or a combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy that may have side effects such as hair loss, skin rashes, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, weight loss, tiredness, increased risk of infections, sleep problems, etc.
