Aphasia :
Aphasia is a condition that causes deterioration of certain parts of the brain. As the condition progresses, the affected individual loses the ability to understand language. It becomes difficult for them to express their thoughts. Moreover, when someone speaks to an individual with aphasia, they may feel as if they are being spoken to in a foreign, unknown language. Aphasia can be permanent, but it is temporary in some cases.
An individual with a tumour, aneurysm or infection in the brain may develop aphasia. The condition may also develop due to a traumatic brain injury, brain surgery, stroke, chemotherapy or epilepsy. The diagnosis of aphasia involves a number of tests such as imaging tests and blood tests, among others. It is treated by treating the underlying cause, which may involve medications or surgery.
