Adenoids :
Adenoids are tiny glands that are present in children between the ages 3 and 8. They are situated behind the nasal cavity and work to fight germs that enter the nose and mouth. The adenoids begin to shrink and disappear on their own when a child crosses the age of eight.
When children are affected by allergy or an upper respiratory infection, the adenoids become swollen. These glands can also swell up due to nosebleeds and recurring ear infections. Some of the symptoms of swollen adenoids include mouth breathing, snoring, nasal congestion and sore throat. If a doctor suspects that a child's adenoids are swollen, the doctor may order sleep studies or imaging tests to provide a confirmed diagnosis. In some cases, tests like nasal endoscopy or bacteria culture test may be performed. Swollen adenoids are treated with medicines.
