Adenoids :
There are some glands present at the back of the nose that are a part of human immune system. Adenoids can sometimes become repeatedly infected posing problems especially in children. If this recurrence does not subside with conservative treatment, adenoid removal surgery or adenoidectomy is done. For this, the surgeon puts the individual to sleep. An instrument is placed to keep the mouth open for the procedure. Then a spoon like device called a curette is used to scoup off this gland. Then electricity is used to cauterize the area to avoid bleeding. The back of the nose is packed with gauze so that the mucous and blood drains into the packing material. Following the surgery, a complete recovery is for about two weeks. Enlargement of adenoids is generally treated this way and is relatively safe. It has no association with any long term complications.
