Colorectal Surgeon :
A colorectal surgeon is a super specialty surgical gastroenterologist or a general surgeon with additional certification in management of colorectal conditions. They primarily evaluate, diagnose and treat conditions affecting colon, rectum and anal regions such as diverticulitis, hemorrhoids, colorectal cancer, colon polyps, rectal prolapse and fecal incontinence. Some of the early symptoms include rectal bleeding, bowel changes, abnormal masses, unrecognized abdominal pain and tenderness. A colorectal surgeon conducts routine colonoscopy or cologuard/stool FIT tests for susceptible individuals due to a strong family history of colon cancers, and personal history of poor lifestyle choices. Academic proficiency and clinical expertise are combined with qualifications from MBBS (Bachelor or Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery), MS (Master of Surgery) in General Surgery with super specialization in Colorectal Surgery. Some of the surgical procedures performed by a colorectal surgeon include colectomy, removal of colon polyps, proctectomy and surgical excision of external hemorrhoids. They work alongside oncology doctors to provide complete treatment for colorectal cancers postoperatively. A regular surveillance for such conditions is deemed essentially to prevent secondary complications.
