Coronary Angioplasty :
Like any organ in the body, the heart requires a continuous blood supply. The coronary arteries deliver the necessary blood to the heart. However, these arteries can become narrow or get blocked due to plaque build-up. Such narrowing or blockage of these arteries is cleared up with a procedure called coronary angioplasty. The procedure involves widening the narrowed or blocked arteries to restore the correct blood flow to the heart. The word angioplasty refers to the process of inserting a balloon into the blocked artery and expanding it to stretch and widen the artery. In most modern-day coronary angioplasties, the doctor also places a stent into the affected artery. A stent is a mesh tube that facilitates the continual flow of blood into the heart. The procedure usually takes around two hours, and most patients return home on the same day.
