Retinoblastoma :

Retinoblastoma is rare cancer that develops in the retina of the eye in the childhood. Inspite of survival from the cancer the child may loose the eyesight in the affected eye . It can be a hereditary genetic defect or congenital mutation of retinoblastoma protien. Signs and symptoms of the cancer include white pupillary reflex also known as cat's eye reflex , crossed eyes (strabismus), redness or swelling in the eye with galaucoma, loss of vision/blindness, white glow in the eye (leucocoria) , proptosis (if the tumor spread outside the eye). It can appear as whitish translucent mass. Retinoblastoma is relatively treatable if the tumor is contained within the eye . Hence it is important for the early diagnosis.

Screening for retinoblastoma should be done within the first 3 months of the baby that include checking for red reflex , corneal light reflex , eye examination . Genetic testing is done if necessary. Treatment is focused on preserving the life of the child then to preserve the vision that includes EBRT (Eternal beam radiotherapy), enucleation of the eye, brachytherapy, thermotherapy, laser photocoagulation, cryotherapy etc,.
