Mums :
Mumps is a contagious viral infection caused by the mumps virus and belongs to the group of viruses called paramyxoviruses. It is mostly seen in children between 2 to 12 years of age. Symptoms at the initial stage are mild and include fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, and loss of appetite. Later, swelling of parotid glands occurs, known as parotitis, and can occur either on one side or both sides. The classical sign of mumps is "chipmunk cheeks". Severe symptoms include high fever, stiff neck, severe headache, confusion, stomach pain, vomiting and seizures. Mumps spread from person to person through direct contact or from respiratory droplets from the infected person via sneezing, talking, infected saliva, and kissing. People with weak immune systems who travel internationally, who are not vaccinated, and who live in close quarters are at high risk of developing mumps.
