Insomnia :
When an individual has difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, it is said that the individual has insomnia. Insomnia can occur due to a variety of reasons and it may be mild or severe. It is usually a short-term problem that develops due to stress, family pressure or trauma. Individuals with short-term insomnia can recover on their own within a few weeks. However, if insomnia continues for more than a month, then it is said that it is chronic. The underlying cause of chronic insomnia is usually a reaction to certain medicines or overuse of caffeine, tobacco and alcohol.
A doctor can diagnose insomnia by reviewing the medical history and sleeping patterns. A physical exam and a sleep study may also be performed. The treatment of this condition involves cultivating better sleep habits. The doctor may suggest lifestyle changes and may also prescribe medicines.
