Deafness :
Deafness or hearing loss is the inability to hear sounds partly or wholly. This condition may be unilateral or bilateral. Mildness extends up to a complete loss. Deafness is caused by several factors like genetic factors, exposure to high decibels of sound, infection in the ear, aging, and injury to the ear. Long exposure to noise, such as industrial workers, or exposure to loud music can damage the miniature hair cells responsible for hearing within the inner ear. Most infections that affect meningitis or the ear could create conditions for hearing loss.
Symptoms include hearing inability, which means that a person may not be able to hear conversations. In other cases, the patient may find necessary to turn the volume of electronic devices to the highest level while others may argue that the mumbling of others. If deafness begins early, children's speech may be temporarily delayed in development.
Treatment varies from severe to minimal infection, depending on the cause of the infection, which parts of the ear are affected and to what degree. Mild ones may be treated with hearing aids that amplify the sounds. Cochlear implants may be used for severe infections. Medical and surgery interventions can treat infections or blocks in the ears. Early detection and intervention will ensure the proper management of deafness and hence better quality of life.
