CABG / Open Heart :
The heart requires a continuous supply of oxygenated blood to continue beating normally. The blood is supplied to the heart via small arteries that are wrapped around the heart. However, these arteries can become blocked or diseased, resulting in little or no blood flow to the heart muscle. The lack of blood flow causes the heart muscle to start dying and can cause a heart attack. Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting is a treatment that can restore healthy blood flow to the heart.
In the CABG procedure, a surgeon extracts blood vessels from other body parts and makes new blood vessels with them. Then, the surgeon attaches these new vessels to the heart to pass blood to areas that lack blood flow. The entire procedure can take several hours, depending on the number of vessels required. CABG is an open heart procedure, which means the chest and ribcage are cut open to access the heart. The patient is connected to a heart-lung bypass machine that keeps oxygen-rich blood flowing into the body while the surgeon repairs the heart.
