Burns :
Burns are injuries that occur when an individual is exposed to high temperatures. Burns usually occur when an individual is exposed to fire in a motor accident or an accident in the kitchen. Besides exposure to fire, burns can occur due to chemicals, radiation, electricity and friction.
Burns are categorized into first, second and third degree burns, in order of increasing severity. If only the upper layer of the skin is damaged and turns red due to the heat, then it is called a first degree burn. In a second degree burn, the skin changes texture and becomes painful. If the heat burns through the skin and reaches the fatty tissues underneath, then it is called a third degree burn. The diagnosis of burns involves a visual examination. An MRI and CT scan may also be performed to gauge the extent of damage. Treatment of burns involves medications, bandaging and wound care.
