Alcoholic Liver Disease :
Alcohol liver disease occurs due to excessive consumption of alcohol. Types are steatotic liver, acute hepatitis, and cirrhosis. Early signs include pain in the abdomen, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, and decreased appetite. Symptoms of acute hepatitis are jaundice, hepatomegaly, higher heart rate, respiratory rate, and altered white blood cell count. Signs of the late stage include edema, swelling of lower limbs, accumulation of fluid in the abdomen, fever, shivering, itchy skin, losing weight, fingernails curving excessively, general weakness, muscle wasting, blood in vomit and stools, bleeding and bruising more easily and sensitive reactions to alcohol and drugs. Diagnosis is made by blood tests, liver biopsy, ultrasound, CT scan, and MRI. Treatment includes abstinence, cognitive behavioral therapy with medications like acamprosate, Vivitrol, Topamax, baclofen, and disulfiram, lifestyle changes, and a liver transplant.
