Pterygium :
Healthy humans have a small amount of flesh at the corners of the eyes, towards the nose. Pterygium is a condition in which the flesh becomes larger and grows into the white part of the eye. The flesh may grow with visible blood vessels in it. Pterygium is also known as surfer's eye, since surfers are more likely to develop this condition. The excess flesh associated with pterygium can continue growing until it reaches the iris. When it reaches the iris, it can damage the vision.
The condition can cause symptoms like swelling, dryness, burning, itching and pain in the eyes. An eye specialist can diagnose pterygium with a comprehensive eye exam. The doctor may prescribe eye drops for relief from the symptoms. In severe cases, surgery is required to remove the extra flesh from the eyes.
