An oncologist refers to a medical doctor who has undergone advanced training to diagnose and treat various types of cancers affecting an individual. To specialize as an oncologist, the needed academic qualifications are MBBS, followed by post graduation like MD/ DNB in General Medicine, super specialization DM in Medical Oncology or MS/ DNB in General Surgery and MD/ DNB in Radiotherapy and Oncology or M Ch/ DNB in Surgical Oncology. Depending on the type of treatment they offer, an oncologist is classified into three different types. Chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy and hormonal therapy are used by a medical oncologist to treat cancer, whereas a surgical oncologist performs surgery to get rid of the cancer. Radiation oncologists utilize high energy radiation therapy to manage cancer. An oncologist stages a cancer by offering various treatment options, monitoring the post treatment complications, and also providing follow up care to the patient.
