Neonatologist is a medical professional or a paediatrician who is specialized in diagnosing and treating various conditions of newborns and neonates(less than 28 days after birth). A neonatologist helps in management of conditions like neonatal jaundice, complications of premature births like low birth weight or very low birth weight, respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), sepsis, hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, and congenital anomalies or birth defects like congenital heart diseases(CHD), cleft palate or cleft lip etc. The doctor evaluates the newborns for any potential health issues and provides necessary care and support in NICU(neonatal intensive care unit) through medications, respiratory support and interpreting diagnostic tests. They also collaborate with other doctors like obstetricians, pediatricians or radiologists to provide the overall best health care and support to the baby.
