Atherosclerosis :

Arteriosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory condition characterized by the accumulation of fatty deposits, cholesterol, cellular waste and calcium most often in the inner lining of the arteries which is known as the plaque. This plaque has the tendency to narrow down or stiffen the arteries which in turn results in reduced blood flow to vital organs of the body such as heart brain limbs and others. If left untreated atherosclerosis can lead to very serious complications such as coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease and stroke.

Some of the common risk factors which can lead to atherosclerosis are high blood pressure, smoking, and high cholesterol. As the build up or plaque increases, they rupture and trigger blood clots which may further lead to obstruction of the blood flow . Atherosclerosis is the primary cause of majority of the cardiovascular events. Treatment involves lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise, medications and in more severe cases surgical intervention it restore the blood supply.
