Immune thrombocytopenic purpura or ITP is a rare autoimmune disorder in which there are low levels of blood platelets. As a result, blood does not clot properly.
The main reason behind this is production of certain antibodies that attack and destroy the blood platelets. ITP is more common in young children, around 2-4 years of age. Such children experience increased episodes of bruising and bleeding.
