Colon cancer or colorectal cancer affects the mucosal lining of the colon, a part of the large intestine and also rectum. It is can be initially developed from mucosal growths/polyps of the colon.
The colon cancer can be easily diagnosed at the early stages with the help of routine colonoscopy screening. Individuals with severe and chronic anemia, inflammatory bowel disease of family history of colon cancer are more likely to develop this cancer. It can also present as symptoms such as blood in stool, frequent bowel changes, sudden and unintentional weight loss.
There are five types of stages and several sub types of colon cancer based on the TNM cancer classification guidelines. Increased alcohol intake, excess cholesterol intake and sedentary life style with predisposition to chronic and systemic diseases may elevate the chances of colon cancer.
