A neurosurgeon is popularly known as a brain surgeon. Neurosurgeons specialize in addressing medical conditions related to brain, spinal cord and associated nerves. They undergo complete clinical training during several academic years which include MBBS, MS or DNB in General Surgery followed by specialization in Neurosurgery. They evaluate concerning symptoms related to neurological dysfunction such as sudden loss of consciousness, tingling sensations, numbness in the extremities, memory changes, gait and balance issues, difficulties with speech and language, hormonal changes, muscle twitches, persistent facial, neck or back pain, and bleeding from nostrils. A neurosurgeon conducts neurological examination with various clinical tests. Some of the common diagnostic procedures include nerve conduction study, CT or MRI scanning of brain and spinal cord for complete evaluation of underlying tumors, injuries or dysfunctions. They primarily provide treatment options such as management with medications, corticosteroid injections, physical therapy and lifestyle modifications. They perform surgical procedures as a part of emergent or planned treatment options for blood clot or tumor removal, aneurysm repair, carpal tunnel release, spinal fusion, laminectomy and other spinal cord related surgeries.
