Low Vision :

Low vision is a visual inability or an impairment that affects the quality of daily life due to compromised vision related activities. It can be caused by underlying medical conditions such as age related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, cataracts and glaucoma. It is associated with loss of central and peripheral vision, contrast sensitivity, enhanced night vision, and loss of depth and color perception. It is clinically evaluated by various vision tests such as visual field acuity test by an eye doctor. Low vision cannot be corrected with surgery, prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses. The management of low vision is primarily conducted by visual rehabilitation, occupational therapy and mobility training. Use of visual aids such as magnifying eyeglasses and telescopes, besides assistive technological aids may help in management of the condition. Regular follow-up with an eye doctor will contribute in early detection and prevention of this condition.
