HPV is a viral infection that affects genital organs through sexual transmission and causes skin or membrane warts. Not all HPV strains can cause cancerous conditions like cervical cancer, some may cause less harmful genital sores. There are other types of warts such as plantar, flat, and common warts. Routine Pap smears and cervical examination including vaccination against HPV are highly recommended to detect any precancerous cervical changes in women. HPV infection in men is less harmful and can be managed with medications and surveillance.
Genital warts can be treated with procedures such as cryotherapy, electrocautery and other medicated creams. Following safe and protected sex, and regular sexual screening are recommended measures to prevent and/or monitor any evidence of early HPV infection.
