Gastrectomy is a surgical removal of stomach. It is of two types, total gastrectomy which is indicated in complete removal of stomach and partial gastrectomy /gastric sleeve surgery which is indicated in partial removal of the affected part or in obesity patients. Patients are guided to follow advised regimen prior to the surgical resection of the stomach and also post operatively. Some of the severe complications noted with this procedure are anastomotic leaks, bile reflux, afferent and efferent limb syndrome, malnutrition, hernia, dumping syndrome, and post-surgical gastroparesis. Following a restricted dietary changes may help in better absorption of the food. If there is any evidence of persistent vomiting, nausea or bleeding post-surgery, then reporting to emergency department may help in addressing further complications.
