Healthy ears contain glands which produce a waxy oil substance commonly called as ear wax and medically termed as cerumen. Ear wax plays an important role in protecting the tissues, and preventing infections by trapping dirt, micro-organisms and other irritants. Although ear wax possess many vital functions, Some individuals may experience ear wax blockage characterised by symptoms such as ear ache, sensation of fullness in one or both the ears, and tinnitus. Reasons for this ear wax blockage include over production of the wax, narrow ear canals, hairy ear canals, vigorous cleaning with ear buds, and working in dirty environments. Treatment may include drops to soften the wax, and wax withdrawal by an ear specialist.
