Claudication pain occurs due to restriction of blood supply to the muscles during exercise and the pain resolves at rest. Hence it is also called as intermittent claudication. Sometimes in chronic cases the pain may persist even during the rest. This is a symptom of peripheral artery disease which affects mostly the lower extremities.
The nature of claudication pain is dull and aching, which may feel like muscle cramp/Charley horse. This condition is evaluated by complete physical exam, diagnostic tests like arteriogram, ankle brachial index (ABI) and other radio-imaging studies. It is managed by medications that include blood thinners, statins, hypertension and diabetes controlling medications. Compliance to regular physical activity, proper diet and healthy balance, quitting the consumption of tobacco products are proven measures to lower the chances of re-occurrence of claudication pain.
