Cervical rib is a developmental anomaly where there is an extra rib arising from the cervical spine. This extra rib can be present either as a small bony structure or a complete rib reaching the chest bone. This is a rare phenomenon that can be present since birth. This condition does not usually result in any complications or associated symptoms.
However in some cases, cervical rib may pinch or compress nerves and blood vessels in that area. This leads to disturbances in the arms. Thoracic outlet syndrome is a condition that can occur due to cervical rib. This syndrome results in a person to lack the ability to hold or lift heavy objects or even raise arms above shoulders. This can be diagnosed only with X rays where the extra rib is clearly noticed. In cases where there are only mild symptoms, physical therapy is advised. In severe cases however, surgery is required to remove the Cervical rib.
