In Bow Legs, both the knees are curved outward. This results in the formation of large oval shaped gap between the legs. Individuals are born with Bow legs which can be a result of lack of space and less expansion of the uterus during the gestation period. In most cases, when infants are born with bow legs, these get self corrected in two years. However, if this condition occurs later in life, surgical intervention is required to fix Bow Legs. Rickets can lead to the formation of bow knees. Rickets is a disease that is either caused by calcium deficiency or vitamin D deficiency. It can also be apparent in Dwarfism. The short stature of an individual usually below three feet in height is due to an deficiency in growth hormone. This results in bowing of the knees due to improper weight distribution. Repeated Fluoride or lead poisoning in water can lead to brittleness of the bones. These bones loose strength and bend either inward or outward.
