Alcoholic liver disease also called as alcohol related liver disease is a common and preventable condition refered to a damaged liver due to over consumption of alcohol resulting in fat buildup,inflammation and scarring. Liver is a complex organ in the human body exhibiting numerous important functions such as blood filtration, cholesterol regulation,energy storage etc. Hence liver damage can affect the whole body leading to chronic irreversible ailments.
Alcoholic liver disease is classified into three types steatotic (fatty liver), Acute hepatitis, and Cirrhosis associated with symptoms that differ depending on the stage of the disease, while the commonly experienced early symptoms are loss of energy, decreased appetite, nausea , vomiting , belly pain and spider like vessels on the skin. Diagnostic tools such as liver function tests, liver biopsy,coagulation studies and complete blood count are employed for the evaluation of this condition.
