A mass of pinkish tissues, situated at the back of the throat, right behind the nose are called adenoids. They are a part of the lymphatic system of our body and are responsible for keeping disease-causing pathogens such as bacteria and virus, away.
Adenoids are present till the age of 5 years, after which they start shrinking and totally disappear by the time you reach adulthood. The adenoids are also responsible for producing antibodies, a class of proteins in the blood that fight against disease-causing invaders. Children often suffer from enlarged adenoids which can be treated by removing them surgically through a procedure called adenoidectomy.
