Thyroidectomy :

Thyroidectomy is a procedure in which a part of the gland or the entire thyroid gland is removed surgically under anesthesia. It is performed by a general surgeon or surgical endocrinologist. Throidectomy can be of different types depending on the medical condition that includes total thyroidectomy (removal of the entire gland), hemi thyroidectomy (removal of only half of the thyroid gland), subtotal thyroidectomy , near total thyroidectomy , partial thyroidectomy etc. It is important to preserve the parathyroid glands located at the back of the thyroid gland to prevent calcium deficiency. Indications for thyroidectomy includes thyroid cancers, benign thyroid nodules, hyperthyroididsm, thyroiditis, multinodular goitre and also helps to relief the symptoms like compression, difficulty in swallowing , pain due to enlarged gland etc. After the surgery(total thyroidectomy) the patient has to be supplemented with life long synthetic thyroid and monitored regularly
