Prostatectomy :
A prostatectomy is a surgical procedure that involves removing the prostate from the body. It is usually performed to treat prostate cancer, but it may also be done to treat conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia. Prostatectomy is of two main types: simple and radical. In a simple prostatectomy, a surgeon makes a cut in the abdomen and removes inner portion of the prostate while leaving the outer shell intact. The inner portion of the prostate is scooped out of the cut made by the surgeon. This procedure can also be performed using a laparoscope, which requires multiple small cuts. In contrast, radical prostatectomy involves removing the entire prostate from the body, including its outer shell. Some parts around the prostate, such as the tissues, fat and lymph nodes, may also be removed from the body. A radical prostatectomy may be performed as an open surgery, using a laparoscope or using a robot.
