Paralysis :
Paralysis is a loss of muscle control or function , resulting in partial or complete inability to move a body part or a limb. Paralysis can be of sudden onset or gradual paralyzing of a group of muscles can occur as seen in muscular dystrophies. Paralysis can occur due to stroke or CVA ( cerebro vascular accident) / brain injury , spinal cord injury (trauma , road traffic accidents, accidental fall etc,.) , nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy), neurodegenerative diseases like ALS, Parkinson's disease, infections like meningitis , polio , tumors, cysts, trauma, injury, congenital conditions like cerebral palsy etc,.
Paralysis manifests as weakness or inability to move a body part, muscle atrophy, decreased reflexes, loss of sensation or numbness, difficulty speaking or swallowing , respiratory problems (if the respiratory muscles are involved, bladder and bowel dysfunction etc,. Comprehensive examination and imaging (MRI , CT scans ) , nerve conduction study etc, have to be done to diagnose and treat the paralysis.
