Liver failure in children is a condition where the liver is damaged and stops functioning properly. Liver failure in children is classified into various types such as acute or chronic types. Acute liver failure begins suddenly without any sudden history of liver disorders. Chronic liver failure damages the liver for a longer duration and is a set of long term liver diseases. The primary causes of liver failure include metabolic disorders like biliary atresia and alpha-1 trypsin defiency, viral infections such as Epstein- Barr (EBV), herpes (HSV) and hepatitis, viral infections such as Epstein- Barr (EBV), herpes (HSV) and hepatitis, fatty liver, autoimmune diseases, and toxins like rat poison, wild mushrooms, insect killers, some cleaners or solvents and certain medications like erythromycin, valproic acid and acetaminophen. The significant signs of liver failure in children include jaundice, abdominal pain or swelling, enlarged liver and spleen, nausea, pale or gray stools, vomiting and fatigue, and easy bleeding or bruising.
