Hysterectomy :

Hysterectomy is a surgical procedure used to remove uterus (womb) and cervix from the female body. Hysterectomy can be supracervical hysterectomy where uterus is alone removed without cervix, complete hysterectomy, radical hysterectomy where surrounding tissue and lymph nodes are also removed. It can be performed an an open surgery, vaginal hysterectomy where uterus is removed without any cut to the body through vagina and laparoscopic hysterectomy where minimal invasion is enough to remove the uterus.

Few common indications of hysterectomy are abnormal excess bleeding from uterus, uterine fibroid, endometriosis, cancer of uterus and rarely for chronic pelvic pain. Complications of hysterectomy are common such as bleeding, infections, anesthesia complications, menopause like symptoms, damage to surrounding organs like bladder and bowel. Hysterectomy can cause long term side effects like depression, loss of libido, heart disease, osteoporosis if uterus is removed along with ovaries as it effects the production of female hormones.
