Hyperthyroidism :
Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland releases too much thyroid hormone. The excess thyroid hormone increases the speed of metabolism. It can also cause a wide range of symptoms, making the individual feel as if they have lost control over their body. The symptoms of hyperthyroidism include high blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, tremors, nervousness, diarrhea, weight loss and sweating. Some individuals also experience difficulty in sleeping, swelling in the neck and changes in menstruation.
A doctor can diagnose hyperthyroidism with a physical exam, thyroid blood tests and imaging tests like thyroid ultrasound. The treatment of this condition depends on its underlying cause. The doctor may prescribe medications, recommend iodine therapy or suggest surgery to remove the thyroid. Hyperthyroidism is treatable but may require an individual to take medications lifelong.
